Bereaved Mothers Day: Honoring Mothers Who Carry Love and Loss

Updated: Mar 11

Each year on the first Sunday in May, Bereaved Mothers Day is observed to honor mothers who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a child. While many people are familiar with Mother’s Day, fewer know that Bereaved Mothers Day exists as a day specifically set aside to acknowledge the unique grief carried by mothers whose children are no longer physically present.

Bereaved Mothers Day was founded in 2010 by CarlyMarie Dudley, an Australian bereaved mother who wanted to create a space where grieving mothers could be recognized, supported, and honored before traditional Mother’s Day celebrations. For many bereaved mothers, Mother’s Day can be deeply painful, as it highlights the absence of their child. Bereaved Mothers Day provides a moment of understanding and compassion for those navigating motherhood through grief.

The significance of this day lies in recognizing that motherhood does not end when a child dies. A mother’s love, identity, and connection to her child remain forever. Bereaved Mothers Day gives mothers permission to grieve openly, remember their children, and feel seen within a world that often struggles to acknowledge this kind of loss.

For many mothers, grief can feel isolating. Bereaved Mothers Day reminds them that they are not alone. It encourages communities, families, and support networks to extend compassion, understanding, and space for remembrance.

At The Mending Hearts Initiative, we recognize the strength it takes to carry both love and loss. This day serves as a reminder that grief and healing can exist side by side, and that every mother’s story deserves to be honored.

To every bereaved mother: your love is everlasting, your motherhood is real, and your child will always matter. 💜
